How to style a hygge home with wool: Tips from interior designers

With the ‘ber months well underway and things getting chillier by the day, making the spaces we treasure the most as cosy as possible is firmly back on the agenda. ‘Hygge’ has been a buzzword for as long as we can remember, but it’s more relevant than ever as we reach for those extra layers to keep us toasty at home and on the go.

Pronounced ‘hyoo-gah’, this old Norwegian term is synonymous with wellbeing. As a concept, hygge hones in on slow living and the simpler pleasures in life to transform homes of all shapes, sizes and styles into cosy retreats that are warm and welcoming.

As well as bringing cosy, all-natural and truly luxurious accessories to the homes of our lovely customers, we collaborate with so many wonderful interior designers to do the same for their clients. Here we share a handful of tips from a few of our favourites so you can create a cosy, hygge-inspired home using wool products – just in time for autumn!

Start with a calming foundation

“Creating a cosy, hygge-inspired home is all about embracing warmth, comfort and serenity through thoughtful styling. Start by layering your sofas with soft wool or cashmere throws, adding texture, and inviting warmth. I just love So Cosy’s Merlose and Tolone designs!

“Use jute baskets – like this one – to store extra cushions and blankets, blending practicality with natural charm. A soft, serene rug underfoot creates a calming foundation, while earthy shades and amber accents bring nature indoors. Enhance the ambience with incense, candles, and a curated collection of coffee table books and ceramics, adding personal touches everywhere you go. Complete the look with plush, natural fabrics and, if possible, a fireplace to foster that ultimate sense of cosiness.”

    Make cosy layers your go-to

“For a hygge-inspired home, we love to layer cosy wool blankets in neutral shades with textured cushions to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. We’d recommend draping blankets over seating areas and beds for added softness and comfort.

“To complement the look, we specify natural materials like wood and linen, and finish off the space with the soft glow of candles to enhance the calming, serene ambience that defines hygge living. At Abigail Reay, our hygge favourites are the Dakota merino wool cushions in green-grey –  the colour is just divine!”

Mix simplicity and luxury for stylish results

“I believe every material, form, light and texture exudes energy. Don’t be afraid of layering custom pieces with sustainable materials that help you create a nurturing environment that uniquely moves your soul.

    Interior designer Mischa Sedova

“For a cosy yet sophisticated atmosphere incorporate statement wool pieces, such as a natural rug or textured throw, as focal points to elevate the space. For further refinement that puts sustainability first, blend eco-friendly wool with polished materials like weathered metal, polished brass decorative pieces or ironmongery. Other luxurious natural materials like silk, linen and cashmere add yet more warmth and multisensory richness.

“Enhance the cosiness with soft bulb lighting, and decor made from stone or clay for the grounding touch. And remember, conscious design is about creating spaces that not only look good and feel good, but do good.”
