6 ways to up the cosiness in your home this winter

Choosing decor for winter

Christmas may have been and gone, but with the first day of spring a long, long way off – the spring (or vernal) equinox officially takes place on Thursday 20th March 2025 in the UK – we’re still very much in the midst of winter. If, like us, the cool weather creates that overwhelming urge to embrace cosiness in all its forms, increasing comfort where it matters most will remain a top priority as we move into the new year.

To help you on your way to creating a comforting haven in your very own home, we’re here to share our top ways to up the cosiness in your humble abode…

1. Embrace the loveliness of layers

Layering rules don’t just apply to your wardrobe. The same techniques can be used on a wider scale within your home to create rooms that are made for snuggling on the darkest and dankest days, and chilliest nights. One very easy way to add layers of comfort to your living room (or any room for that matter) is via the addition of a soft and generously sized blanket.

Wool offers the crème de la crème of materials to work with, and the rich texture it brings will ensure a warm and inviting ambience that’s perfect for waiting out the winter months. Drape your woolly wonder over your sofas, armchairs or dining room chairs, and keep a few within easy reach everywhere else!

2. Share the warmth in the bedroom

Your use of natural materials should extend to the bedroom. As the place where people feel the cosiness, every bed deserves a warm hug from a beautiful, natural bedspread. Whether you opt for linen or wool, the breathable, moisture-wicking warmth you receive will ensure a great night’s sleep every night.

3. Eat your way to pure comfort

Using Scandinavian concept hygge shouldn’t just influence your choice of home furnishings. A hygge home is after all about so much more. The comfort of hygge should indulge every sense, including those taste buds!

Cosy, comfort food really does feed the soul, leaving you satisfied in more ways than one. We’ll let Elle Décor explain more about the hygge food movement:

“It applies to all aspects of your lifestyle, from furnishings to fashion, and it most certainly applies to food. Chances are, you’ve experienced hygge, even if you didn’t know to call it that. Coziness is a universal goal in wintry climes — the Scots call it còsagach, and Japan has a related concept called ikigai. If you’ve ever nestled into a mug of cocoa, or warmed up with a bowl of stew, it’s likely that you have an inkling of what hygge cuisine is all about.”

    4. Remember, taste isn’t the only sense

The use of warm lighting can also create a cosy and calming atmosphere that feels great during the cooler winter months. Replace harsh overhead lights with soft, warm-toned bulbs, and add floor or table lamps, string lights and candles to create a truly intimate glow.

    5. Surround yourself with cosiness

Enjoying a cosy experience from head to toe is possible with the right home accessories. Scatter wool cushions in the living room and bedroom for a touch of warmth and style, and lay a jute rug to continue that feeling of wellbeing.

Window treatments can be given a cosy makeover too. Swap lightweight curtains for heavier ones made from velvet, wool or thermally insulated fabrics to keep the warm in and the cold out in the most luxurious way.

    6. Create a nook in every corner

Every home should have a cosy nook or two, and if you have a few underused corners available, it’s pretty simple to do.

Start with practical furniture choices like a cosy armchair and side table, before embellishing the space with soft lighting and tactile touches. Dedicate your nook to a specific activity, such as reading, sewing or simply relaxing, to give it a whole new meaning.
