The wool lover’s travel guide: Wool-inspired destinations around the world

Wool lover's travel guide

Wool is a fibre that is truly fascinating. This extraordinary material is celebrated for its versatility, durability and eco-friendly credentials, with its ability to biodegrade fast, or be recycled or repurposed with ease, making it a sustainable choice for clothing and homewares.

Wool’s unique structure provides exceptional insulation too, keeping you warm in winter while remaining breathable during summer. It’s naturally moisture-wicking, odour-resistant and flame-retardant, providing practicality and safety that you just don’t get with other materials. Its softness and low maintenance make wool a stand out material for so many reasons, with its innovative uses in modern home design well worth noting.

We really could go on and on about why we love wool (and you should too), but for those serious about expanding their knowledge of this incredible material, adding the following destinations to your travel bucket list for 2025 is a great place to begin.

Scotland

Scotland isn’t just known for its tweed. Its textile traditions extend to wool, with the wool trade a proud part of its history. The Shetland Islands in Scotland are particularly renowned for their long running ties to wool production. Wilderness Scotland shares just some of the woollen mills that should be on your hitlist during your trip:

“Uist Wool is a spinning mill and wool centre on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. With a strong focus on provenance and local wool, they aim to create the ‘best and most sustainable yarn’ they can. Alternatively, Jamieson’s of Shetland are a household name in Shetland wool. With a legacy dating back almost 250 years, they remain Shetland’s only commercial woollen mill. Their shop in Lerwick is an oasis for wool lovers, and their wool wall is not to be missed.”

While we don’t source the wool we use to craft our blankets and throws from bonnie Scotland, we do call on the expertise of The Mill in Scotland when crafting a vital part of our bestselling picnic blankets. We use durable Scottish waxed cotton to create the ground side of our picnic blankets, with its convenience, longevity and water repellence just some of the qualities we celebrate!

    Peru

From one far-flung destination to another, this time it’s Peru in South America that’s the next stop. We recently returned from Peru, and their incredible Alpaca Fiesta, and as well as having quite the hoot attending the most important alpaca event on the planet, we appreciated just what this fibre means to their nation as a whole.

Alpacas have been a mainstay since as far back as the pre-Inca times, with this characterful creature domesticated at least 6,000 years ago. Their wool has always been highly prized, with the earliest civilisations considering it a gift from the gods.

Alpaca wool remains a luxurious material to this day, and a key part of our collection of cosy homewares.
