Basket Weaving
The basket collection is woven by hand by specialized craftspeople. They braid or roll the plant material into ropes first or they work with pre-braided ropes. After braiding, they can start weaving the basket. When creating new designs they make a mould from iron first. The mould is used to guarantee consistency in size and shape according to specifications. The weaving and braiding techniques are based on ancient traditions. The choice of technique depends on the kind of plant fiber or the design.
The Hogla Basket Weavers from Dhaka, Bangladesh
The handwoven baskets are made by rural men from Bangladesh who travel to the capital city to find work between seeding and harvest time. The workers are provided a roof over their head, cooking and bathing facilities. They do not have to pay for their accommodation and are paid a fair price for each basket they make while they determine their own pace. Although they sleep and work in a very modest workshop it protects them from being underpaid and sleeping on the streets.
A Round Basket from Natural Fibre
The baskets are made from natural leaf fibres. These materials are simply sundried and may contain colour variation and or stains caused by natural elements. Although the material as a whole is strong but the individual leafs can be delicate. Please handle with care. When stained, clean gently with a cloth and a very mild detergent. Do not rub to avoid colour difference and damage to the product. Damaged spots on black basketware? You can be easily touch up with a black marker or some water based black bio paint.
