Could wool be the key to a better night's sleep

recent study from the University of Sydney found that merino wool pyjamas were the key to getting 15 minutes extra sleep every night, following on from this, the way we dress for bed could be changing.

With today’s hectic lifestyles, getting that coveted eight hours of sleep every night is more important than ever. But could adding wool to our bedroom décor be the secret to falling asleep even faster and enjoying a more restful night?

Why wool works

The insulating benefits of choosing wool over cotton or man-made blanket are well known. For a great night’s sleep, humans rely on retaining a stable body temperature.

As per the aforementioned study, it has now been scientifically proven that body temperature remains at its most stable with a little help from wool.

Dr Paul Swan, a researcher at the University of Sydney, reveals more about using wool for guaranteed thermal comfort:

“Maybe it is not a coincidence because wool regulates your body temperature far better, keeping you in what is known as ‘the thermal comfort zone’. You therefore not only fall asleep quicker, sleep longer, but also have deeper, better quality sleep. Enjoying good sleep has become increasingly difficult in modern times, and so anything that helps is great for your mental and physical health.”

Debunking the overheating myth

Contrary to popular belief, wool actually prevents overheating. Instead of the fabric itself becoming saturated with moisture, part of the moisture is absorbed with the rest passing through the fibres.

Thanks to this process, moisture doesn’t condense on the skin, allowing your body to stay cool in hot and humid conditions, and stay warm in the face of cooler temperatures.

With wool, you aren’t left sweaty, or clammy due to rising or dropping temperatures. Wool’s excellent breathable and absorbent nature leaves your body able to retain the stable temperature that ensures a deeper, more satisfying rest.

Made for the bedroom

Wool is the perfect material to take to bed with you, whether you’re opting for some woollen pyjamas or a cosy wool blanket.

Alpaca wool has a long history of keeping people in various climates around the world warm or cool. Like merino wool, alpaca wool also unlocks a range of plus-points that make it the perfect home accessory for bedtime use.
