Whether you’re planning to refresh your lifestyle or hit the reset button on your interior, there’s no doubting that springtime is all about renewal. The bedroom is just one part of the home that will benefit from a few seasonal changes as we move from winter to spring, with a healthy sleep routine the secret to a happy and fulfilling lifestyle.
Your bed sits at the centre of the sleep hygiene debacle, yet keeping your bedding fresh and clean is only part of the puzzle. The type of bedding you rely on from season to season matters. Without further ado, we bring to you our guide to togs, including when it’s the ideal time to switch things up and the materials that make even better bedding alternatives all year round.
Which tog is for me?
A TOG – which stands for Thermal Overall Grade – measures just how successfully a duvet retains heat. The higher the tog rating of your duvet, the better insulation it will provide, meaning you can enjoy more warmth and comfort as temperatures take a nosedive.
Duvet togs start as low as 1 and go up to 15, the latter of which is the best option for the colder winter months. Summer togs on the other hand range from 2.5 to 4.5, whilst togs designed for the transitory seasons (i.e. spring and autumn) tend to be between 6 and 10.5.
What else affects duvet warmth?
The tog rating is important but it is certainly not the be all and end all. The filling of your duvet will impact its overall comfort, with different fillings offering different levels of warmth. This means the thinnest or lightest duvet may not necessarily be the coolest.
Duvets made with natural fillings, like wool, offer the softest, warmest and most breathable options. The age and condition of your duvet can also alter its tog rating and overall comfort, with the signs to replace your duvet able to be both seen and felt.
Why switch from a winter to a summer duvet?
Switching from a winter to a summer duvet, and vice versa, is what many people do in their quest for a better night’s sleep. Our sleep habits change with the season, with our desire for warmth during winter, and coolness and breathability come summer, directly influencing our sleep routines and their success.
Timing the switch just right however is the key to great sleep. Here Ideal Home explains when is a good time to make the change to your bedding:
“Using 15°C as a guideline of when to switch your duvet means the best time will be in either April or May, depending on where you are in the country. Of course, personal preference plays a part too; if you find you’re getting too warm at night before temperatures reach 15°C, you can switch your duvet out earlier.”
Should I get rid of my duvet completely?
Experimenting with different duvet togs from season to season isn’t your only option, it’s not even your best option! By swapping your duvet for a wool or linen bedspread, you can cut the fuss and enjoy great sleep all year round.
Both wool and linen are well known for their temperature regulating, hypoallergenic, breathable and ultra-cosy properties, making them ideal for use as bedspreads from season to season.
